Turkey season is right around the corner and we are super excited to get the season started! We have been scouting a bunch and the birds are gobbling like crazy right now. We are headed down to camp this weekend for the youth season and the weather is finally starting to come around.
Bryan Stone, Hank Hanawalt and I attended the OHA youth turkey clinic this past weekend and had a great time. The OHA youth turkey clinic covers everything from scouting, calling, setups and shooting and it was great to see so many youngsters with smiles on their faces. A big thanks goes out to all the volunteers and Fred and Rennee Walasavage for putting on such a great event, were already looking forward to next years event!
Scouting reports from across the state show good numbers of birds and relatively low amounts of snow making for great spring time hunting conditions. We have high hopes for this years turkey season. We will be updating our blog as the season progresses so be sure and check back often for hunting/scouting reports from across the state and updated pictures on our photo gallery.
On a different note Molly our black lab just turned 1 year old on April 2nd and is now being trained by Steve Waller at Cabin Creek Kennels. Steve runs a great operation and really works with his customers to get them exactly what they are looking for. His kennels are located just south of Rice Hill and can be found at www.cabincreekgundogs.com
Good luck to you this season!

Hunting Report 11/9/2009:
Lower Columbia: Hunting on the lower columbia has been great since the opener with lots of puddle ducks around. I have heard several reports of good numbers of wigeon, teal and pintails. Local mallards have been difficult but there are still quite a few around. Get out there and get on these birds before the first big coastal storm pushes them out!
Sauvie Island: Over the past week lots of new pintail and teal have moved onto the island. After this past weekends storm on the coast and lower Columbia we still haven’t seen a big push of coastal birds. Hunting on the wildlife area has been hit and miss depending on weather. River levels are on the rise and Sturgeon lake has good water.
Willamette Valley: Goose hunting has been pretty good with lots of cacklers around. Tavs and lessers are slowly starting to move into the area and there are some reports of a few specs and some new snow geese moving into the area as well. The 1st period has closed and I expect the 2nd period opener should be great with the number of fresh birds moving into the area. Duck hunting has been tough in the valley.
Columbia Basin: Little geese have been pouring into the upper basin around Moses Lake and parts of the lower basin near Burbank. Duck numbers are still very low and we need colder weather before we see the first big push of northern ducks. Goose hunting has been great!
